The future of fabrication is here: Shapeways announces stainless steel printing

scalednose-picker-by-community-member-maxsmoke
Sure you’re not going to make a Hatori Hanzo sword - yet - but Shapeways, a 3D fabrication service, has just announced stainless steel printing, allowing you to make steel objects as easily as you would made resin or plastic prototypes. That’s right: something that took our ancient ancestors generations to perfect is now available to anyone with a CAD/CAM program and some Red Bull.

scaledmoebius-ants-by-community-member-andre-bois

First, the press info:

Innovation Takes the Stage with Metal 3D printing for modelers and creatives
Shapeways offers 3D Printing in Stainless Steel

SIGGRAPH (August 4, 2009) — Many 3D modelers have found their way to Shapeways to bring their personal designs to life by using 3D printing. Until now the materials were limited to different kind of polymers. Today Shapeways becomes the world’s first company offering 3D printing in stainless steel for everyone.

Technique
This is a completely new technique which deposits stainless steel powder in a very thin layer, combining it with a binding material. Printed objects are built up like this, layer by layer, gradually creating the form just as you designed it on the computer screen. When complete, they are infused with bronze and cured in an oven. After cooling, the models can be left in the original steel finish or tumbled to get a great polished look.

So, as you see, the objects aren’t carved in steel like Terminator parts. Instead they are made of layered steel powder. This would allow you to build heavy-duty items including jewelery and, dare I say it, car parts. The possibilities, in a sense, are endless.

Quick Photo Resizer

Normally, we need to resize our digital photos or other images before sending via e-mail. Quick Photo Resizer offers an ingenious way of processing your images. You simply select a resizing scheme and drag images to the program's window. To process a photo with Quick Photo Resizer, just drag and drop it from any folder of your computer (or from the desktop) into the blue drop target of Quick Photo Resizer. It will be immediately processed with the settings that can be selected using the special control below the blue drop target. Then just drag the finished image file from the right part of Quick Photo Resizer wherever you like (to a folder on your computer, into a new email message, upload to your web site, copy to a CD etc).

The program can automatically choose a JPEG Quality/Compression level for each image to best fit the file size that you selected. Also, it is possible add a custom logo or watermark to the images (transparent GIF and alpha-channel PNG logos are supported along with BMP and JPEG formats). And by the way, the word "quick" in Quick Photo Resizer's name means how quickly you can do things with it, it's not about the speed of its image processing algorithm. We made no compromise on quality and use the finest image resizing algorithm we ever found.

Windows 7 to go on sale October 22nd

It was pretty clear that the latest incarnation of Windows would be available this fall. Now Microsoft has announced the date. The latest version of the Windows operating system, Windows 7, will hit general commercial availability on Oct. 22.

ballmer-windows7

That should give you plenty of time to choose which of the million versions is good for you. Will you be buying a copy?

It’s an interesting time for Microsoft. Some netbooks have begun using Android as an OS, others use Linux. Then there’s the whole anti-Vista sentiment. It will be interesting to see what happens here.

Screenshots from Office 2010

At one point, Microsoft Office had the code name office 14, at least until January, but it looks like Microsoft has decided to use the release year name. So, the next version is to be called Office 2010. Arstechnica has a bunch of leaked screenshots of Office 2010 which should go to testers in 2 months.

office-2010

Office 2010 will arrive next year and include Access 2010, Excel 2010, InfoPath 2010, OneNote 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Project 2010, Publisher 2010, SharePoint Designer 2010, SharePoint Workspace 2010, Visio 2010 and Word 2010.

Now we just wait for the testing and for 2010 to arrive.

Flowbubbles

Now you can enjoy the same floating transparent bubbles that come with Vista even if you're using
Windows98 or XP. And you will have more options to choose from right within the
normal settings box under Screensavers in Windows.

* Choose shape of the bubble (round, heart, glass frame)
* You can have Oriental tones when the bubbles hit each other
* Add any picture (no gif files) to the bubbles (no need to resize)
* Add mask to the picture (2nd one is best)
* Change size of bubbles (tiny to huge)
* Choose number of bubbles (from 1 to 100)
* Add background pictures or have it show your own desktop.

World of Warcraft vs. Lord of the Rings Online

There can be only one.

When one thinks of the great rivalries in the history of competition, there are several matchups that will live on through the ages. Ali vs. Frazier. Cobwoys vs. Redskins. Tastes Great vs. Less Filling. Paris Hilton vs. Lindsay Lohan. There’s really something special when you get two entities at the top of their game going toe-to-toe to see who is left standing at the end. Or, in the case Hilton vs. Lohan, who can spend the most money on rehab. It’s embedded in the human mind to always wonder who is the best at one discipline at any given time, which brings me to the topic of today’s piece: Lord of the Rings Online vs. World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft

Hailing from Azeroth and weighing in at $14.95 a month, World of Warcraft has been the undisputed heavyweight champion of the MMORPG world. It’s had a handful of challengers thrown at it – the likes of “D&D Online,” “Eve Online,” “Sims Online,” “Virtually Jenna,” etc., have all stepped in the ring with the Blizzard Behemoth and have all been summarily knocked the **** out within the first few rounds. Even seemingly “sure thing” contenders such as the Star Wars MMORPG have wound up looking like a punch drunk bar fighter when put in the ring with the champ.

However, Blizzard’s reign of terror has recently run into what seems to finally be a worthy challenger in Turbine’s Lord of the Rings Online. And, since not many people have room in their schedules - or wallets - for two separate MMORPG’s, this is a battle that will most likely lead to only one of franchises standing tall in the end.

Lord of the Rings Online

I have spent a good amount of time with both games during the past month or so, and I’m going to try to present to you a side-by-side comparison of the two games. Mind you, I’m coming from a more “casual gamer” angle, so there won’t be a lot of info on guilds, day long dungeon raids and the other more life-eating and marriage-ruining aspects of these types of endeavors. Instead, I’m speaking to the less hardcore – the folks with families and full-time jobs who would like to try their hand at an MMORPG, but don’t wish to plan their weekends around “epic l00t.”

Think of this as more of a travelogue of the first part of the MMORPG journey.

A Simple Flickr Photostream widget for Blogger

[flickr-badge.jpg]
After posting about Roy Tanck's animated Flickr widget, I realized that I'd never actually written up a tutorial for the simple Flickr Photostream widget which I use in many of my premium templates.

This version of the Flickr Photostream is a static widget designed to display thumbnails of your most recent Flickr uploads, and can be added quickly to your Blogger layout using a one-click installer. It's an ideal solution of you prefer a simpler method to display your Flickr photos which does not slow down page-loading time. You can see an example of how this widget could appear below:

To add this widget to your Blogger blog, you will need to have your Flickr user or group ID which may look something like this: 8191003@N02

The simplest way you get your Flickr ID is to use idGettr (opens in a new window), where you paste the URL of your Flickr Photostream in the box so idGettr can discover your ID for you.

Once you have your Flickr ID you can use the form below to add your own simple Flickr Photostream widget to your Blogger blog:

I hope you enjoy using this widget for your Blogger blogs! Please feel free to leave your comments below.

Display your current location on your blog with Google Latitude

[Screen-Shot19+May.+05.jpg]
If you use Google Latitude, you can now display your current location on your blog using a Google Public Location Badge.

Google Latitude is a feature of Google Maps which, should you choose to enable this, allows selected friends and family members to see your location. You can also give permission for Latitude continuously update your location in the background.

The Public Location Badge is a gadget which you can easily add to your Blogger blog to provide readers with your current location. This feature may be especially useful for travel bloggers or personal bloggers who wish to share their location with friends and family members.

How to add a Public Location Badge to your Blogger blog

In order to add a Public location badge, you will need to use Google Latitude. If you have a compatible mobile phone, you can install the latest version of Google Maps on your handset and use this application to update Latitude with your current location. Those who do not have a compatible handset (or who choose not to use this option) can add Latitude to iGoogle and interact with this application from their desktop/browser.

Visit this page to choose which method you will use to update Latitude with your location.

Once you have set up your handset or iGoogle Latitude settings, you can visit the Latitude settings page to choose with whom your location is shared or add a Public Location Badge to your blog.

Choosing which settings to use for sharing your location

When you visit the Public Location Badge page, there are several options available to choose how your location will be shared:
  • Disable Google Public Location Badge (default setting) - this means that no-one will be able to view your current location, except of course for Google and any friends with whom you have chosen to share your status.
  • Enable and show city-level only - this setting enables anyone to view your location at city level only (not your actual, precise location). Even if you have not added the badge to your blog or website, your status may still be accessed through Latitude searches.
  • Enable and show best available location - this setting enables anyone to view your location on a more precise level. Again, even if you have not added the badge to your blog or website, your status may still be accessed through Latitude searches.
Your choice will depend on your personal preferences. If you have set up Latitude but prefer your status to remain private, be sure to disable your public location badge. And if you do choose to share your location through a badge on your blog, be sure to take into account Google's privacy notice:

If enabled, your location will be publicly available to everyone. You will not be able to limit where and with whom you share your location through the badge.

Add the badge code to your Blogger blog

It is very easy to add your public location to your Blogger blog. Once you have chosen the settings and tweaked the width and height of your gadget according to your needs, you can simply press the "Add to Blogger" button which will transfer the code directly to an available widget location in your layout:

After adding your gadget to your blog, you can visit the Layout>Page Elements page to move the gadget to an appropriate location in your blog's layout.

Another option would be to paste the code for your location into a blog post. Simply copy the HTML code in the box to your clipboard, then paste into a blog post when editing using the "Edit HTML" tab. This will embed your gadget directly into your blog page.

Important note: once you create and publish this snippet on any web page, anyone with access to your web page could copy the code elsewhere so that your location is still accessible even after you remove the code from your page. If you want to stop broadcasting your location, you must disable this by visiting the Public Location Badge page.

Will you be using the Public Location Badge in your blog?

Personally I prefer not to use this gadget in my own blogs, since this has no relevance for the subjects I write about, but as I mentioned earlier, this new feature may be a useful gadget for travel bloggers or those who wish to update family and friends with their location.

Have you added this gadget to your own blog? Or would you consider using it? Please let us know your opinions and experiences of the Public Location Badge by leaving your comments below.

This is Advance Task Manager.
The default view in the Processes tab remains more or less unchanged. The only two differences are icons for every process listed and Windows system processes are grayed out to increase the visibility of non system processes.

The Task Manager software extension would be mediocre at best if those were the only changes. The majority of changes have been added to the right-click context menu. The two entries Information and Properties which display all kind of information about the selected process. Useful information include the system path, process environment variables and service information if available.
